GST Composition Scheme, Is It Right for Your Small Business?
10 July 2026 · Piatto Pro Team
The GST composition scheme is one of those options that sounds obviously good, pay less tax, file less paperwork, until you read the fine print. For the right small business it’s a genuine simplification. For the wrong one, it quietly costs more than it saves.
What it is
The composition scheme lets eligible small businesses pay GST at a low flat rate on turnover instead of the normal item-wise rates, and file quarterly instead of monthly. Less tax on paper, far less compliance work.
The catches (read these first)
Three trade-offs decide whether it’s worth it:
- You can’t charge GST to your customers. You issue a bill of supply, not a tax invoice, and absorb the tax yourself.
- You can’t claim input tax credit. The GST you pay on purchases is a sunk cost.
- You can’t sell inter-state (broadly) or through e-commerce operators under the scheme.
Who it suits
It fits a small business that:
- Sells mostly to end consumers (who don’t need to claim ITC anyway),
- Operates within one state, and
- Has turnover under the scheme’s threshold.
A neighbourhood kirana, a small restaurant, a local retailer, these are classic fits, because their customers don’t care about tax invoices and their input credit would be small.
Who should avoid it
If you sell B2B, your customers want a tax invoice so they can claim credit, the composition scheme makes you a less attractive supplier. If you buy a lot and could reclaim meaningful input tax, giving that up may cost more than the compliance you save. And if you plan to sell across states or online, you’re out.
The honest answer
Run the numbers both ways for your actual turnover and customer mix, or ask your accountant to. The scheme is a real win for a genuinely small, local, consumer-facing business, and a quiet tax on anyone who’s outgrowing that shape.
Whichever GST structure you’re on, your billing should match it, a proper tax invoice when you charge GST, a bill of supply when you don’t. Piatto Pro’s billing issues the right document for your registration, so you stay compliant without thinking about which is which.
