How to Start a Kirana / Grocery Store in India

20 June 2026 · Piatto Pro Team

The neighbourhood kirana is the most resilient business in India, but “resilient” isn’t the same as “easy”. Grocery runs on thin margins and high volume, which means the difference between a good month and a bad one is control, not luck. Here’s how to set one up properly.

1. Pick the location like it’s the whole business

Because it nearly is. Footfall, nearby competition, parking, and how far your regulars have to walk all decide your ceiling before you stock a single shelf. A slightly higher rent on a busy corner usually beats a cheap spot nobody passes.

2. Sort the paperwork

  • GST registration once you cross the threshold.
  • Shop & Establishment registration for the premises.
  • FSSAI registration if you sell packaged food (most kiranas do).
  • Trade licence from the local municipality.

Keep digital copies; renewals sneak up.

3. Build supplier relationships

Grocery is a relationship business on the supply side. Line up distributors for staples, a backup for volatile items, and negotiate terms, even a small credit period smooths your cash flow. Track what you owe each supplier so payables never surprise you.

4. Plan your stock around how people actually shop

Stock the daily staples deep, rice, dal, atta, oil, sugar, tea. Carry enough personal-care and household range to make you a one-stop shop, but don’t over-invest in slow items early. Watch what sells for the first two months, then double down.

5. Get the billing right from day one

This is where kiranas quietly bleed. On 2-5% margins, an untracked discount, a miscounted pack or a slow stock leak matters. Barcode billing keeps the counter fast and honest; real-time stock tells you what to reorder before you run out; and clean GST invoices keep you compliant without effort.

A grocery counter also can’t afford to stop when the internet does, which is why an offline-first POS that keeps billing through outages, with inventory and GST built in, fits the kirana better than a cloud-only till. Piatto Pro runs retail and grocery on the same engine that runs restaurants, tuned for your counter.
